New Moon Meanderings + Practical Magic & Samhain Ritual

We are currently under the transformative influence of a potent New Moon in Libra, marking the conclusion of the eclipse energy that commenced at the Equinox in September. This Libra energy is a powerful catalyst for balance, urging us to harmonize areas of our lives that may feel overwhelming or have become obsolete. It’s a time for shedding old patterns that no longer serve our future dreams and desires.

This new moon serves as a compelling call to introspection, prompting us to examine areas where we might be living inauthentically. What habits have we adopted that disrupt our internal or external equilibrium? Are we still operating from outdated societal norms that bind us to expectations and hinder our growth?

The energy of Libra reminds us to take a look at things that might get out of balance when life just gets too busy. We are in the Libra Sun Moon phase, which is a period when the Sun and Moon are both in the sign of Libra, through today. So take this energy and ask, “What might I want to come more into balance in my life?” “Where am I giving more than I am capable of or that is needed?”

During this phase, we are also under the influence of the fiery feminine energies of Eris and the healing powers of Chiron. Eris encourages us to rebel against habits that hinder our authenticity, while Chiron stands ready to heal every step of this transformative journey, offering hope and optimism.

This isn’t easy. Awakening to what might be out of balance in your life can bring a swath of emotion. It takes courage and support to create behaviour change. So be gentle with this process.

Samhain Community Gathering and Ritual

The veil is thinning. October 31st – November 1st are the most potent times of its thinning, but we can tap into it within three days on either side. This is a powerful time of year. A time when we can feel and touch our ancestors—connect, honor, and remember them. As I write this now, I can feel a burst of energy for our gathering on November 1st.

There are still two spots available if you’d like to join. I’ll have an altar ready for photos of your loved ones and will be in the spirit of honoring our lost souls and inviting them in for healing. If you feel called to join, you can register using this link.

I am creating a festive offering for you to fill your home with the warmth of the season. As this is also a special time of year, we will invite the sacred plant medicine of cacao into our time together.

If you don’t have plans to attend a community gathering, below is a private ritual you can use if you feel called. Feel free to incorporate what feels right to you.

  • Create an Altar. Below are some items you might consider.

    • Photos, heirlooms of your ancestors (blood, land, or heart)
    • A set of black and white candles (tapered). Black to release and white to ask for guidance.
    • A small bowl of salt and water
    • Incense, mugwort (if you have it), but any will do.
    • Fire-safe dish with matches or a lighter
    • Offerings for the altar: Apple slices, bread, honey, tea, tobacco
  • If you have one, a bell would be nice to call in the ancestors with sound
  • Prepare your favorite herbal tea. If you have it, use cacao for a heart-opening experience.
  • A slip of paper to burn your release or seal your prayers
  • Protective tools you need, like black stones, a shawl, or a blanket. include may

Take some time to create your space. Place your salt and water using your intuition, and allow the spirits to guide you. Make sure to take the time to ground yourself with slow, intentional inhales and exhales, meeting each inhale with ease and exhale with softness.

Cast a protective net in your space:

“As I prepare myself for the ritual, I invite that which is from the light, and only from the light, to enter this space in my heart and home. I invite my ancestors from seven generations before and seven generations ahead to be here with me for guidance, for love, for insight, clarity, and healing. Only those in the right relationship with the light may draw near; all others remain outside this boundary that is my home, my spirit, my mind, and my land. I surround myself with white light and ask my guardians to protect my home, my spirit, my heart, my mind, and my land. So be it.”

Release

On paper, write a pattern/story/obligation you’re ready to complete. Read it once. Then either:

  • Tear the paper and press the pieces into the salt, or
  • Hold the paper to the candle flame briefly and drop safely in a dish (skip if not safe).

Say:

“I thank you for what you taught me. I release you to the turning of the year.”

Sound and Stillness

  • Place a hand on your chest and hum gently. Let the hum get a little fuller for 3–5 breaths, then softer.
  • Or play a single soothing track (no lyrics) and breathe.
  • Close with one minute of silence. Notice any word, image, or feeling that arrives.

Candle Gazing (Pyromancy)

Gaze softly at the flame and ask:

  • What wants tending this winter?
  • What boundary protects my peace?
  • What is the next loving step?

Write a few lines. Keep it simple and true.

Blessing & Thanks

Touch a fingertip to water and anoint brow, throat, heart:

Touch salt lightly, press palms to thighs:

“I walk with the earth. I am held.”

Offer a sip/bite of your tea or cacao to the altar (or the earth in a plant pot). Say:

“Ancestors and helpers, thank you. I release you from this space and honor your presence.” To the guardians, those of you who wish to stay, stay, and those of you who want to leave, may leave.

Blow out each candle and honor the space you have created.

May you be well. May you be blessed. May your life be full of ease.
